Learning Dispositions

At Oak Field Primary School, we believe that developing positive learning dispositions is key to empowering our pupils to become confident, independent, and resilient learners. Our learning dispositions are the attitudes and habits that help children face challenges, explore new ideas, and reflect on their own learning journey.

What are Learning Dispositions?

Learning dispositions are the qualities and attitudes that help children approach learning with confidence and curiosity. At Oak Field Primary, we focus on six key dispositions that we believe are essential for lifelong learning:

  • Effort: We encourage children to always try their best, even when tasks are challenging. Putting in effort shows determination and a commitment to improving and reaching goals.

  • Self-awareness: Understanding our own strengths and areas for growth helps us to make good choices and reflect on our progress. Self-awareness is about recognising how we feel, what we are good at, and what we need support with.

  • Resilience: When things get tough, resilience helps us keep going. We teach our children to bounce back from setbacks, learn from their mistakes, and never give up.

  • Curiosity: A curious mind is always eager to learn and discover. We encourage children to ask questions, explore ideas, and seek out new knowledge.

  • Collaboration: Working well with others is a key part of learning. We promote teamwork, listening to different perspectives, and helping each other achieve our goals.

  • Communication: Being able to share ideas, listen to others, and express thoughts clearly is vital for effective learning. We support our children in developing strong communication skills.

Reflecting on Learning

We encourage our children to reflect on their learning dispositions regularly. Through classroom discussions, self-assessments, and peer feedback, children learn to identify which dispositions they used effectively and where they might need to improve. This reflection helps them understand their own learning process and develop strategies to overcome challenges.

Supporting Your Child at Home

Parents and carers can support the development of learning dispositions at home by celebrating effort, encouraging curiosity, and talking about how challenges are opportunities to grow. Working together, we can help our children become strong, capable learners ready for whatever challenges come their way.
