Pupil Development Grant
Supporting every child to achieve
The Pupil Development Grant (PDG) is funding provided by the Welsh Government to help schools reduce the impact of poverty on children’s educational outcomes.
At Oak Field Primary School, we use our PDG funding to remove barriers to learning and ensure that all children have the opportunity to thrive, achieve and reach their potential.
Our PDG Funding (2025-2026)
For the 2025–2026 academic year, Oak Field Primary School has been allocated a total of £170,456.
This is made up of:
-
PDG: £88,550
-
Early Years PDG (EYPDG): £35,650
-
PDG Smoothing: £40,785
-
PDG for Children Looked After: £5,471
How are we using our funding?
Our funding is carefully targeted through our school improvement planning to address barriers to learning and improve outcomes for disadvantaged learners.
High-quality teaching and literacy support
We provide additional and targeted support to help children develop their literacy and learning skills. This includes Read Write Inc., PM Reading, precision teaching and IDL, alongside targeted adult support.
Wellbeing and readiness to learn
We recognise that children need to feel safe, happy and ready to learn.
PDG supports a range of approaches including ELSA, sensory circuits, emotional regulation support, Motional-informed practice, readiness-to-learn interventions and targeted pastoral support.
Early intervention
Our Early Years PDG helps us provide support as early as possible.
We focus particularly on children’s communication and language, physical development, and emotional and social wellbeing.
This includes working in partnership with Flying Start and providing our Tots and Tunes sessions for pre-school children and their families.
Supporting children looked after
Our PDG-LAC funding is used to provide targeted therapeutic support for children looked after, including access to a play therapist.
This supports children’s emotional wellbeing, regulation and engagement with learning.
Supporting families and our community
As a Community Focused School, we recognise the important role that families and the wider community play in children’s learning and wellbeing.
Our Family Engagement Officer and wider school team work closely with families and external services to provide practical support, advice and signposting and to help remove barriers to attendance, wellbeing and learning.
How do we measure the impact?
We regularly monitor and review how our PDG funding is making a difference.
This includes looking at:
-
pupil progress and attainment;
-
the impact of targeted interventions;
-
reading, spelling, phonics and communication assessments;
-
attendance and punctuality;
-
wellbeing and readiness to learn;
-
individual provision and support;
-
pupil progress meetings; and
-
feedback from children, families and staff.
We use this information to identify what is working well and adapt our provision where necessary.
What difference is PDG making?
Our evaluation shows that PDG funding has strengthened our ability to:
-
identify children’s needs earlier;
-
provide timely literacy and learning support;
-
improve children’s readiness to learn;
-
provide consistent pastoral and emotional support;
-
strengthen relationships between children and trusted adults; and
-
support children to make progress from their individual starting points.
For some children, providing the right wellbeing and emotional support is an important first step in enabling them to successfully engage with learning.
Our commitment
At Oak Field, we are committed to ensuring that poverty is never a barrier to a child’s success.
Our PDG funding is an important part of our wider work as an inclusive and Community Focused School. It helps us bring together high-quality teaching, early intervention, wellbeing and family support so that every child has the opportunity to succeed.
Together Everyone Achieves More.
